3 Vital Tools that Will Structure Your Job Search

3 Vital Tools that Will Structure Your Job Search Job hunting is a test of organisation and persistence. Lose either and youll lose the race. The job market is more competitive than ever, with  an average of 250 CVs received for each job position.  You can never predict where or when your next dream vacancy will appear, so stop fantasising about desired results and instead devise practical steps to achieve them! Being on time with applications is just as important as being suitable for a position. But how do you manage visiting so many job boards, job search engines, and the career sections  on sites in as little time as possible? With any task you want  efficiently completed, you will need an organised  checklist. But  how do you perfectly  lead  your job search? Here are three useful tools to managing your vacancy  hunt, and perhaps saving you time. Plus, all three of these apps are completely free, and can be used on both desktop and mobile devices! 1. Notational Velocity Notational Velocity is an application that allows you to store and retrieves notes. Whats brilliant about this tool  is that its a cloud-based note storage application, so you can instantly  take your notes from the computer to your devices. I use this app constantly to keep my notes organised and together. Beyond keeping track of your job search ideas, if ideas strike you at awkward moments  on-the-go, Notational Velocity is the perfect app to type  up some concepts quickly, ready for when you get home to your desktop. Also, notes work offline, and sync automatically when back online. Notational Velocity also works with useful note apps such as Evernote and Simplenote on iOS and Android. 2. Listango Listango is a simple bookmarking tool that makes it easy to save, organise and share your favourite web pages.  You can now also import all of your bookmarks from your favourite web browser to Listango. This means you can copy all of your bookmarks from your numerous web browsers and access them from any device anywhere, continuing your relentless job search. The website is pleasant to use, and theres a Chrome extension app to quickly add bookmarks to your account. If theres an area in which Listango can improve, its the site not being mobile optimised.  Hopefully soon theyll release a mobile-optimised site, or even better a dedicated Android and iOS app. 3. Pocket Pocket  is a good application for  saving things you want to view later. You can access Pocket on your computer, iOS or Android devices, even without an internet connection. Pocket allows you to save almost anything, including articles, links and videos.  You can save directly from your browser or from apps like Twitter, Flipboard and Pulse. While Pocket is a versatile application, I personally dont find the interface for reading articles is as good  as Instapaper, another read later  app that primarily focuses on a minimalist style for saving and reading  articles. Use these tools to not only  Bookmark websites for companies youre interested in, but to keep your notes and important bookmarks in sync. Stay organised by using  these cloud-based apps  to their  full advantage! How do you manage your job search effectively? Do you use any of the tools mentioned? If You Have Only One Week What Will You Do - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

If You Have Only One Week What Will You Do - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career If one week is all you have left, what will you do? Many frequently forget to appreciate what is in front of them while time slips away. Too many disturbances get in the way having  most people choosing  to remain in their comfort zone. Is there any reason you can’t do all of what you envision or at least some of it if you have a long lifetime ahead? The point is to get very clear on what to focus so that success will be far more likely in your forecast. The noise of what one is  supposed to do or should do is tiring yet most people give in. They act obediently to please those putting out the advice. And some believe they have to invest in the latest and the best of everything. The problem with that is they collect a pile of ‘things’ that have little meaning or value in the long term. Others look to the future as to how they may help improve society or at the very least improve their education. “Seek out like minded friends friends” is a common theme but not everyone adheres to it. As with other ideas, there are many sides to the meaning. One reason this is important is that not all days work out spectacularly, but on the down days it is your friends who will lift you up. Collecting life experiences is far more important than things. The adventures become a lifelong investment of learning and a vehicle for sharing intriguing stories. Both your friends and your clientele will whole-heartedly welcome the conversations. None of us are free from unexpected events that may stop us in our tracks. The point to all of this is to know in your soul what holds most important to you and how you might empower others coming up behind you. Once you recognize and focus on what you cherish most, life will become more meaningful and enjoyable. If you have ever dreaded Sunday evening because Monday morning requires a drive to work that you don’t care for, you may wish to give the following questions some thought. In your quiet time reflect on your past experiences that excited you the most. Answer the questions as to why they were exciting, and what your takeaways were. Some questions to consider: Is there more of the same experience in your future? Are there related paths you might consider? How can you focus on the most exciting events to turn them into a more interesting career? Whichever career you choose, enthusiasm has to be seen in your face and in your voice. Otherwise, others will stay away from you and this holds true for prospective clients, too. As one who might qualify and match friends, it’s important to take stock of our own characteristics and personality traits to put our best selves forward. By taking the needed steps to find the enjoyment in your career  and life, you will simultaneously help to build an admired personal brand. Sales Tips 1. Find the excitement in your life’s work. 2. Examine past experiences for ideas of what to do next. 3. List the adventures that bring a smile. 4. Figure out how you might develop a new career based on what you most enjoy. 5. Create a new list for the investment, education and time allotment to make it happen. 6. Confer with friends about your new idea. 7. Gather best advice for making the idea a reality. 8. Prioritize your thoughts with the advice to fast track development. 9. Decide upon your first baby step and take action. 10. Celebrate Success!

CV Tips What Recruiters Really Want

CV Tips What Recruiters Really Want When pursuing a dream job, your CV will need to impress recruiters and show them that you are a  strong suitable candidate.  But what exactly do recruiters want to see in a CV and how do they need the information presented? StandOut CV has put together an infographic to show how recruiters really  assess your  CV, and the challenges they face in securing the best talent.  Once you know what their lens looks like,  you can adapt your CV accordingly to give them  what they need, and land more job interviews. The first hurdle! Firstly, you must persuade recruiters to open your CV.  Even the best CV in the world is useless if it sits unopened in a recruiter’s inbox.  To ensure that recruiters open your CV in the first place, you must include a powerful cover note to  tempt them in.  Keep your cover note short and sharp to save the reader time and provide a summary of how your  skills and experience match the job advert requirements.  Remember to address the recruiter by name and write in a friendly tone to create a good impression  and start to build a rapport with them. Recruiters scan your CV for relevant content Once a recruiter has opened your CV, the first thing they will do, is spend an initial 6-10 seconds  scanning the CV for the essential skills and knowledge.  This is initial scan is just to ensure that your CV has enough of the role’s candidate requirements,  before they invest the time read your CV in full.  If your CV doesn’t pass this quick scan, then it’s likely that the recruiter will close your CV down and  move on to the next one.  To ensure that your CV makes an instant impact when opened, make it easy to read and highlight  the skills that are relevant to your target roles.  Use a clear simple font, break text up, structure the pages well and make your relevant talents  prominent. Recruiters focus on your current role Your current or most recent role is by far the biggest indicator of what you are capable of at this  stage of your career; so recruiters will spend a lot of time studying this section of your CV.  They want to know things like: Your position within the organisation Overall goal of your role People you interact with (managers, suppliers, customers etc.) Tools/software used (IT packages, machinery, hardware etc.) Work produced (reports, websites, physical products etc.) Targets and achievements Write about your current role in great detail to give recruiters lots of information and show exactly  what you have contributed to your employer. Older roles can be shortened down and summarised  to save space on your CV. Recruiters look for numbers Facts and figures are excellent indicators of value for recruiters because they give an idea of the  scale of impact you have created.  So recruiters love to see numbers on your CV that quantify the results you have achieved for  yourself, employers and clients.  When writing your CV, try to add some measurable achievements such as: Generated 150 unit sales in 3 months Resolved 95% of complaints in 24 hours Cut department spending by 15% Recruiters scare easily Recruiters work hard to maintain good relationships with hiring managers and providing bad  candidates can seriously damage those relationships.  For this reason, recruiters are very careful about which CVs they recommend for positions.  Things like gaps in employment and sloppy formatting can be enough to worry recruiters into leaving  out of the shortlist.  Don’t give recruiters any chance to doubt you; ensure that your CV looks professional and has no  deal-breaking mistakes. Onlnie No Insa Bridal Dress

Onlnie No Insa Bridal DressAlthough Onlnie No Insa is not the most popular style of bridal dress, there are a number of reasons why it is great for your special day. It looks great on many types of skin and is available in various lengths and sizes. It also allows you to choose whether or not you want the dress to be strapless or not.Onlnie is made from cotton and silk and has a beautiful floral design on the bodice and the skirt. The fabric is designed to flatter any body type and is available in different colors and designs. For those who are concerned about having an over-sized or unusual shaped body, there is an option of a sarong-style design that will accommodate the curves of the body. These styles also have a touch of lace and come in the color of your choice. If you do not like the idea of wearing something that has a high neckline, there is still the option of a mini dress which allows your arms to go above your head.Although many brides prefer a strapless design, Onlnie No Insa is not the only brand that offers this style. Other brands include the Dixie and Carol of Beverly Hills, which are available with spaghetti straps or without. Many of these bridal wear options are made from organic cotton and silk, which make them even more environmentally friendly than regular clothing. The length of Onlnie No Insa is also a big plus because you can find many styles that are shorter or longer than normal. A shorter dress may be perfect for a beach wedding and is great for small areas such as the aisle. If you are not a fan of the traditional princess style, Onlnie No Insa can still be used as a casual wedding dress, but they are usually shorter than a traditional princess gown. For this reason, they are a little easier to find. You can purchase them in a number of lengths including below the knee, mid calf, and above the knee.Because there are many colors to choose from, it is often necessary to take the length into consideration when purchasing your dress. For example, if you are wearing an Onlnie No Insa that is shorter than the rest of your bridal party, you may want to consider bringing another dress to cover the waist. This will allow you to still feel like a princess, even if you are not in the picture. When choosing your style of the Onlnie No Insa, make sure that you also consider the shape of your body. If you have a smaller shape, you will probably be able to get away with a shorter dress, but you will need to be careful to make sure that it does not reach past your ankle. If you have an oblong-shaped body, you may also want to consider a full length dress so that you can show off your legs. Full length dresses have always been a style that most brides prefer for the ceremony, but they are getting less popular nowadays because many people are choosing to wear a dress with only a halter. When choosing a dress for your wedding, you need to make sure that you have a lot of options available to you, and that these are all good choices . Not all styles of bridal wear are created equal, so make sure that you do not go with a style just because it is the trend. Most importantly, choose a style that you really like and that suits your personality.

Resume Pet Peeves Straight From the Hiring Managers Mouth

Resume Pet Peeves Straight From the Hiring Managers Mouth Katharine Hansen of  Quintessential Careers,  recently surveyed dozens of hiring managers for her new book,  Top Notch Resumes for Executives,  to uncover their biggest pet peeves when it comes to candidate resumes. Here are a few of my favorites.  Get rid of the fluff. I talk about this frequently with my clients. Some seem very attached to words like team player, detail oriented, and good communicator. Believe me, these are not good choices for professional and executive level resumes. It is assumed that you have these competencies and besides that, these words are meaningless unless you have solid, metrics-focused accomplishments documented in your resume. Its time to move away from the junior-speak and move towards documents that showcase measurable success.Explain the story behind your accomplishments. Increased widget sales by 50% does not have meaning for a hiring authority unless you explain the context and the timeframe of the accomplishment. Increased widget sales by 50% in just 6 months by implementing a national marketing campaign that included a branded monthly product newsletter, multiple radio and television spots, and a money back guarantee program helps the reader better understand your unique value proposition.Ditch the functional resume. Hiring managers dont like them. It makes it too hard for them to figure out what you accomplished when. Its better to preserve the chronology, but add strategic functional categories under each job listing to prove competency and skill transferability.Be transparent. Hiring managers want to see your entire chronology, even if its listed in a section called Early Career and simply states company names and position titles. I counsel my clients to keep their employment experience intact and I encourage them to put their graduation date on their resume as well. Without these dates, you create the elephant in the middle of the living room syndrome and actually call more attention to the very thing you were trying to hide.

Elimination Dance

Elimination Dance found via pecannoot Emma Alvarez Gibson is kick-ass. Thats how I need to start this intro. When I met her (through Twitter!), she was working full-time as a proofreader copy editor as well as blogging her heart out on Old Soul Ink. I became a fan right away, identifying with her renaissance soul, her creative passion, her quick wit. But in February, her life changed and when she asked if she could write a guest post for me, I knew she had to tell her inspirational story.   If I give you her bio here, or say anything more, Im going to ruin the story. Sojust read on. * Its last winter. Im working full-time as a proofreader/copy editor for an ad agency. The branch I work for is based in-house at an automotive corporation. The automotive folks are fantastic; the agency directly providing my paycheck is, how you say, a joke. Im miserable. Ive spent many, many hours sending out resume and cover letter after resume and cover letter. Arranging furtive phone interviews in the ladies room and from my car, I am in awe at how Im just not getting hired. Its never been this hard for me to find a job. Becoming a stay-at-home-mom is totally out of the question; our family needs to be a two-income family. (Los Angeles is many great things, but inexpensive is not one of them.) I feel beyond stuck. And beyond guilty, reminding myself of the statistic I heard somewhere: if you are lucky enough to live in Southern California, assuming youre not below the poverty line, youre doing better than 97% of the planet. It comes in handy sometimes, but in this situation, working-class guilt is a tremendous debilitator. Because even though Im more burnt out every day, more tired and dull and just lame, I feel like Im being greedy for wanting something fulfilling out of my Monday-through-Friday. But I do. I want more. A lot more. And I am beginning to think Im never going to be able to make it happen. Partly because, although I know what sets me ablaze and what I am really, really good at, Im not sure how to transform those things into a job. Also, I am busy blaming my inherent interest in the world at large for the position Im in. If I were the type of person who has always wanted to be a chemist, or a baker, or a cop, I wouldnt be in this quandary. Id have found my niche long ago and settled in for the long haul. Instead, Im the type of person who finds a million things fascinating. I want to learn about almost everything. I know a little about a lot, and a lot about a littlemost important: words and connecting people. My interests would require a few more lifetimes for satisfactory exploration, to say nothing of my hobbies. Needless to say, my work experience is varied. Checkered. Some might say random. Ive worked in PR, film and television production, publishing, sales, the spa industry, the automotive industry, the dot-com industry. Ive been a manager three times, a massage therapist once, a director of editorial once and an assistant too many times to count. And that long, meandering path has led me here, to a job that should have been fantastic and was instead awful. Im a bit of a pathetic clod at this point, quite frankly. And then along comes February 2. I am laid off, given a short severance option and a box for my belongings, and then escorted out of the office. (My boss doesnt say good-bye, make eye contact or even remind me not to let the door hit me in the arse. Stay classy, boss man!). Well. Everything changes. I had four weeks of my normal paltry paycheck coming, and after that, about 60% of that paycheck, courtesy of unemployment benefits. I had no idea what to do. It was surreal. It was a tiny bit scary. But mostly, it was effing magical. * Cliffhanger! Come back bright early tomorrow to see how Emma used her bad news to create the life shes always wanted (you knew that was coming, didnt ya?), see where she landed, get an AMAZING offer to use her services (can we say: 60% off a treat?! Yes, we can. I aint kidding, people.)!
